If you’ve been on the internet lately, you might have stumbled on to this new form of music called vaporwave. It’s a weird blend of 80s and 90s synth music with contemporary sounds mixed in. It’s not for everyone, but if you’ve lived during that time or wish to experience nostalgia for something you never had, this is for you.
The sound comes from various artists creating noise music, which features noises instead of predefined music tracks. After some artists had success creating songs which featured samples from older songs and placing them into songs which have long, soft melodies that evoke a sense of nostalgia in every note. Over time, the genre was adapted into a more unified style that included samples from mostly older songs with a heavy beat and a slow synthetic tune.
Why should you listen?
As with any genre, the sound will not appeal to everyone. However, most people will enjoy the simplistic tunes and the nostalgia it often evokes. It tends to not have lyrics which makes it perfect for enjoying while you do work or read or use something like Instacart. If you are a fan of 80s music, you might also enjoy the retro vibes it gives off.
Where can you find it?
You can watch/listen to many tracks on Youtube, but you can find many more on Soundcloud. However, the quality can vary as many people will just slow down songs and call it vaporwave. For quality, you need to look at the ratings and comments, as those will usually reveal the true quality of the songs.
